Enhanced Two-Phase Jet Impingement Technology Development

Some of our past work includes designing multi-scale surface enhancement structures for improved two-phase jet impingement heat transfer.  Our goal was to maximize heat transfer while minimizing the pumping power.  Our multi-scale surface combined macro-scale area enhancement from fins with a micro-scale nucleate boiling promoter.  When paired with a complementary jet impingement array, this surface greatly improved the cooling capabilities of the jets (by more than 4-times!) with very minimal increases in pumping power.  This work was performed in collaboration with Toyota and resulted in 5 patents that may lead to high-efficiency electronics cooling loops in future hybrid or electric vehicles!
